Title: The Hunted
Series: 9INE Realms
Author: Bethany-Kris
Genre: Dark Fairy Tale Retelling
Release Date: January 6, 2020
After witnessing the murder of his mother by a mermaid, Prince Eryx Bloodhurst of Atlas makes a deal to sedate his need for vengeance: they’ll catch the mermaid who did the deed, but he’ll pay for it with his crown.
Arelle, third princess of the Blu Sea, has never known the true cruelty of the forbidden lands firsthand, but she will soon. The halfling prince with murder in his eyes and the sea’s songs in his blood will make sure of that.
He should kill her.
Perhaps, keeping her might be worse.
Two kingdoms are falling. One king is losing it all and another threatens to ruin everything. The rules of the land and sea are changing. Secrets of the past are spilling.
And all because of a prince and his little mermaid—whether they live or die—nothing in the realm will ever be the same.
*
In The Hunted, Bethany-Kris opens a new world—the 9INE REALMS—for readers with a dark fairy tale retelling, and pulls inspiration from the cult classic favorite and the Hans Christian Andersen original to redefine what it means to be The Little Mermaid.
“You never tried to run.”
So many did. And were killed for it, too. “No,” his mother said quietly. “Why?” Anthia’s walk came to a stop, and so did Eryx’s beside her. Her violet eyes—the one thing he hadn’t taken from his mother because he wasn’t full-blooded like she was—met his blue stare, and he mirrored her soft smile. “Now, that, you really should know the answer to.” “I think I do.” “But maybe you want me to say it?” “Maybe,” he agreed. “For you. I never ran because of you.” So yes, he had known. He was just selfish enough to admit he liked that answer, too. Even if he shouldn’t. “Do you know why else I sang to you?” his mother asked. “When you were little, I mean.” “I don’t even remember it.” “Not here,” his mother said, pointing at her right ear and winking. Then, she pointed at her heart before also gesturing at her mind. “But in these places, you can’t forget them. The water songs—the siren’s calls, Eryx. It’s the thrall of the mermaids. Families hear them singing for miles. Mates, even farther. Through waters and storms and wars … we hear them inside. You hear them, too. Why did you think you came to find me here?” “I thought the songs were a way of warning …” Anthia grinned. “Or a way to call someone home.” The wind blew again, and this time, his mother sang with it, the melody twisting and curling with the breeze and through the trees. He stood right beside her, heard the song as clear as day, but it almost seemed to echo within him, too. Except when she stopped … Well, the song didn’t. But it wasn’t his mother singing anymore. Anthia’s head tipped up, and the paleness of her face became far more prominent when her eyes widened like the two moons beginning to peek through the heavy, dark clouds overhead. The song continued on, coming closer and … higher? Eryx looked upward into the fruit trees. “Who is sing—” His mother made an inhuman noise. “Run.” His stare snapped back to his mother. “What?” “You’re more like them than us, and that’s all the mermaids will see. Run, Eryx.” She didn’t give him the chance to argue about it. The singing in what seemed like the trees above them came louder with every passing second. Her hand locked around his wrist, and she darted back up the channel of high water fruit trees. She ran like the wind, but he was still faster. It didn’t matter because he stayed behind her as they weaved through the narrow trail beside the trees, avoiding low hanging branches that swung in the suddenly heavy winds. The storm had arrived. He should have listened to the rustling of the leaves. The creak of branches. He might have heard the mermaid when she dropped down on top of them. Except he didn’t. Not until it was too late. Red hair and violet eyes. Fingernails sharpened like claws that dug into his throat and teeth bared with a vicious hiss slipping past snarling lips. She was naked, shifted from her water form to walk on land although she attacked from the trees. Eryx’s mother’s screams pierced through the howling winds, but from which direction he couldn’t be sure. All he could see was violet eyes and fire-red hair intent on ripping the throat right out of his fucking neck.

Oh, do I have a fun little read for you! |
My boss wants to put a ring on my finger. When my house burns down, my insurance company thinks it's my fault. In a single night I lose everything. My life is ruined. The next morning I stumble into work, wondering if people will notice I slept in my car, and in my daze I walk right into the guy who owns the whole company. Marcus Steere, billionaire extraordinaire. He dresses to kill, and his blue eyes lock me on the spot. I'm so overwhelmed that I let it slip out how I'm about to end up on the street. I need someone to blame. Doesn't he cut the checks? Good. It's semi his fault I'm so broke. Marcus is stunned by my blunt honesty. And then he makes me an offer too good to refuse. I just have to do one thing... Pretend to be his wife. This naughty novella is a complete standalone full of all the good and dirty things Penny Wylder writes best! |
Um, can we talk about that cover???? OH MY LORD!
My Review
I've posted about Penny Wylder's books on my blog in the past but never had the chance to read one. I can officially say I'm hooked! So this little short 98-page read is about Ruby and Marcus. Not going to lie, Ruby is one of the most clumsy absent-minded girls I've ever read, but she's super enjoyable too, like you just feel for her and what her to get a good break in life. After literally burning her house down, on accident of course, she runs into her boss at work the next day, not just her boss but her boss's boss, Marcus Steere.
I don't want to say much more cause this is such a short read but Marcus is swoon-worthy and Ruby is just a fun girl to read about, very relatable in many ways.

Below is my vision of Marcus Steere, Bill Angel from IG. He just looks like the head of a major fashion company, chiseled body, sexy, mysterious, yet you know there's a sweetheart under it all.
I wanted to start 2020 off right, so I read a book in one sitting ... which was easy to do considering I couldn't put this book down! Now before we go any further please read ... I'm not a "Daddy" fan in the romance world. I just can't get into it, not sure why, cause even some of my favorite authors have daddy series but it's just not my thing. Faking It For Daddy by B.B. Hamel however is definitely a book I could read, even with the "daddy" talk. So if you're like me, this book is worth checking out!
Here's the synopsis from Amazon
She just has to fake it once… Then I’ll have her begging me to make it real. I’ve never had a girl fake it before… but now that’s all I need. Just one fake… you know, to help close a business deal. My new business partner from Monaco is a little too… friendly, and I don’t mix business and pleasure. That’s where my new tasty little assistant Paige comes in. She just has to fake it, pretend to be my girl, and I can seal this deal. Fool them once then move on. Paige gets paid, I get this new hotel, we all win. Totally simple, right? Except when I see her fake it, I know I have to taste the real thing. The way her eyes lock on mine, the way she grips the bathroom sink, her whole body shaking, I swear… I don’t care if it might sink decades of work… I’m taking her for real. It’s time for another hot one! Fake It For Daddy is a steamy billionaire older man / younger woman romance with some Sugar Daddy themes. If you like over the top crazy characters, lots of sizzle, and a guaranteed HEA, this one’s for you. |
My Review
As I said above, the "daddy" wording in this book is totally fine, it's subtle, not in your face, every other word, etc which was so enjoyable cause I instantly fell in love with the characters. Leon is your typical hot A F asshole boss that you secretly want to take into the copy room. Paige is his assistant but I LOVED that she was a strong, smart, independent woman ... definitely not a push over.
Paige has just about had it with her boss Leon but she needs the job and knowing she's getting paid a pretty dollar is what makes her stay. She keeps thinking that just a little longer and she can tell him where to go, but then, as she's gathering herself in the bathroom, there's a knock at the door, it's Leon, he's asking her to fake it for $10,000. That means Paige could possibly quit sooner, so she fakes it, and Leon writes her the check. Soon enough the faking act needs to go on a little longer while Leon is working out a business deal. Leon may be working on the biggest deal of his career but he's also realizing his "little Paige" is better than any business deal he could dream of ...
The story flowed so well with hot steamy sex, flirting, typical asshole boss scenes, and secondary characters that weren't annoying to read about. (I truly hate when secondary characters are just filler, yah know?) One of my "go-to" book boyfriends is Nick Bateman, I know he's overused but that's immediately who I pictured Leon being. Paige I saw her as Anya Chalotra, which could be cause I've just immersed myself in The Witcher over Christmas but she's got that dark hair, doe-eyed look & I could see her going toe-to-toe with Leon.
